Fins and Friends
46 x 35″
For hours, I just floated, about 20 feet above. I, on the surface, in mask and snorkel, the natives of Caribbean reef below, oblivious of me peering down. Physically not so far apart, yet we inhabited separate worlds. Here sunlight pierced the water, illuminating the colors. The clouds cast shadows, muting them.
In “Fins and Friends” I aim to capture the palette of that near-but-distant world of color and texture and living creatures.
Hand-dyed and commercial fabrics. Fish are painted or dyed. Vegetation on the reef is built with nuno-felted pieces and hand appliquéd. Machine pieced and quilted on a home machine.
